Wammy Titan 3 Octa Core Review – A Balanced Approach

The Wammy Titan 3 Octa is powered by a MediaTek MT6592 octa core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz coupled with a Mali 450 MP GPU. The Wammy Titan 3 Octa is priced at Rs. 14,990/-. The handset comes with Aqua Protect technology, which will cost Rs. 1,500/- extra should you consider going with it. There is also another Rs. 500/- extra for shipping.

Box Contents

The box pack is in line with current Samsung slim packaging. It contains the Wammy Titan 3 Octa Core handset, the battery is a 3200 mAh battery, quick start guide, magnetic flip cover, travel charger, data cable with micro USB pin, earphones (non in-ear) is included in the box pack. Most of the video reviews I’ve seen on the net indicate that it comes with two batteries, but I did not receive an extra one in my box.

Visual Design

The Titan 3 Octa is in fact a duplicate or a clone of Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The build quality is good and the rear side looks like leather but is actually plastic with textures. The volume rockers are to the left, the power button is on the right, micro USB port and mic at the bottom, and a 3.5 mm audio jack on the top. On the rear, there’s a 13 MP camera with LED flash and a 5 MP camera on the front. At the bottom front, there are two touch sensitive navigation buttons and a physical dedicated button in the centre line the ones on Samsung devices.

Dimensions / Display

The screen is 5.7 inches and is a HD IPS-LCD display with OGS Dragon Trail Glass with full lamination and supports a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (320 PPI) with 16 Million colors and supporting 5 point touch. The touch sensitivity is really good as well as the viewing angles and color reproduction. The handset is 8.81 mm thick and weighs in at about 169 grams.

The Operating System

The handset runs on Android 4.2.2 and is upgradeable to 4.4 KitKat when it becomes available. Though I’m not sure how this would be implemented, either through OTG or through direct service. Either way, you’ll have to wait and see.

Memory / Storage

The device is available in Black and White. I bought the black handset. The device runs on Android 4.2.2 (it is upgradeable to 4.4 Kit Kat when released) with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. The Micro SD card slot supports SD cards up to about 64 GB. Of the 16 GB internal storage, 1.15 GB is allocated for apps and roughly about 12 GB is for phone storage. Although the handset does not support OTG I was able to connect an iBall Hybrid OTG USB Pen Drive and it worked without any flaws. Maybe the latest handsets coming have been updated for recognizing OTC devices.

Handset Performance

The Wammy Titan 3 Octa performed really well in all departments be it casual usage, browsing internet through Wi-Fi, listening to music, running heavy applications or using benchmarking apps, and playing games. The handset did not show any lags.

Games (the fun stuff)

I installed Asphalt 8 and GT Racing 2 and they worked fairly well in high graphics mode. The handset was able to play a lot of the high-end games with relative ease and at high graphics settings.

Video / Camera (front and rear)

The Wammy Titan 3 Octa can play full HD videos. The rear camera is a 13 MP AF camera with LED flash and the front camera is 5 MP. The camera quality is good, but with little grains when pictures are blown up. This shouldn’t be worrying as most people don’t look too closely to pictures. I do feel that they could have gone with a better camera. The rear camera can record FHD videos at 30 fps.

Sound and Music

The audio quality of Wammy Titan 3 Octa is good and there are no issues as far as I could tell with notification/ringtones and music being loud and clear. There was no crackling or hissing sounds that I could make out at high volumes, though I would not do that as it would harm the speakers in the long run.

Battery

The battery is of 3200 mAh and should let you comfortably go through your day-to-day activities with ease. However, if you are using CPU-intensive apps or plan on playing games on end, be warned, the battery tends to heat up. When the temperature is above 45 degrees or more, a message will pop-up telling that the battery is over temperature and to remove the battery.

Using the handset for the first time running benchmark apps (with Wi-Fi on) the battery dropped by 11% and max temperature was 43 degrees. Next, I played Asphalt 8 and with auto brightness for 15 minutes the battery dropped by about 10% and the max temperature was 48 degrees. That’s when I got the battery over temperature message.

For normal or average usage, there will be no issues. If you want to play high-end games in hot or humid environments, the battery heats up pretty quickly. The battery does drain fairly quickly when using processor-intensive applications.

Others / Extra

The Wammy Titan 3 Octa is powered accelerometer, magnetic, light, and proximity sensors. The LED notification only supports red color. USB/Bluetooth, WAP, WI-FI (802.11 b/g/n, supports Wi-Fi hotspot), supports Wi-Fi direct, A-GPS, EPO assistance, 3G, WIFI, GPS, FM, Bluetooth, Tethering & Portable Hotspot.

Verdict (at last…)

The Wammy Titan 3 Octa is something that everyone would want from a powerful smartphone. The performance is smooth, camera quality should have been better (but I’ll live with it). 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage is an added advantage. The dual SIM Wammy Titan 3 Octa handset is available for a price of Rs. 14,990/- and with aqua protect it will cost Rs. 1500/- extra. It’s a very good buy for the price considering its feature. I don’t mind the brand as long as the device works and provides me with what I require. I do feel the camera and battery performance should have been better.

[How-To] Maximize Your Laptop's/Notebook's/Netbook's Battery and Performance

It's been now several years with my old trusted laptop and very rarely it has let me down, other than the case where I had to change the motherboard, but it's lasted me a good five years and I've used it roughly and it has been on numerous trips with me to many places around India.

Today, I’ll be showing you ways and methods to recuperate those and maximize your battery life. Some of the steps may require you go into the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) of your laptop / notebook / netbook, and others would be simple software tweaks.

Every laptop / notebook / netbook user wants a longer battery life, but only a few know how to get it without buying a new laptop / notebook / netbook. Even though manufacturers have made great developments and improvements over the past years in increasing the efficiency of their products, even the most efficient batteries aren't lasting long enough for today's users.

You would not have realized this, but your laptop / notebook / netbook even though it is brand new is loaded with integrated peripherals and bloatware (read manufacturer customization's and branded software) that you won’t use and consumes more resources than needed and reduces your laptops / notebooks / netbooks battery life.

Before we go into the nitty-gritty of things, firstly you should do a full review as to why batteries die in the first place. From the basic components like the CPU to the track-pad/mouse-pad, each and every component of the laptop / notebook / netbook consumes power. The amount of power consumed varies from one component to another component and also fluctuates based on factors and conditions such as core/system temperature and processor/system workload.

The higher the number of components / peripherals attached to your laptop / notebook / netbook and the more amount of work you do with it, the quicker the battery will drain. Every background program, driver, or service that loads, and every electronic circuitry that is used uses a teeny-weeny bit of battery power. Thus, reducing the number of attached or active peripherals and minimizing the load placed on the laptop / notebook / netbook will increase the batteries life.

Most of the manufacturers or vendors customize their laptop's / notebook's / netbook's to their liking and they are not easy to hunt down and remove or eliminate. So you, as the owner, have to make an effort to minimize this resource consumption and maximize the battery life.

Some of the immediate things you can do with a new purchase or even on older laptop's / notebook's / netbook's is by:

  1. Keeping your laptop's / notebook's / netbook's cool
  2. Dimming its display
  3. Enable system hibernation

In this how-to I’ll be focusing on things that will illustrate the benefits of modifications and tweaks

There are a number of hardware and software tips, tricks, and tweaks and to increase your laptop's battery life. However, some of these tips, tricks, and tweaks may cause your laptop's / notebook's / netbook's to function under par or to even cease to function. So, it is, therefore, imperative that you should take this advice with a pinch of salt and be very careful. Even though I have tested these tips, tricks, and tweaks on my own laptop, I will not and cannot guarantee / warranty that they will, would, could, or should work with your hardware.

Therefore, with this thought in mind, in no event shall I be liable for any damages whatsoever (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business/personal profits, business/personal interruption, loss of business/personal information, or other pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to use the advice, even if you have been advised of the possibility of such damages. You also agree that I will not and cannot be held liable for any deleterious and/or injurious changes that might occur as a result of you following the tips, tricks, or tweaks mentioned in this guide.

ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE YOU CHANGE THINGS IN YOUR SYSTEM AND YOU KNOW IT MAY BECOME WORSE OR BAD.

Every electronic component (such as diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, optoelectronic devices, valves, discharge devices, resistors, capacitors, magnetic (inductive) devices, networks, transducers, sensors, detectors, antennas, assemblies, modules, prototyping aids), be it active, passive, or electromechanical use power when they are used. When they are not used in any function, they contain static power which is just static energy.

Disabling and/or disconnecting unused and unwanted peripherals will improve battery life immensely. Software-wise disabling, uninstalling, or removing unnecessary applications and/or services will greatly help conserve power consumption. In addition to that, updating drivers (it would be video drivers most of the time) helps by letting the system optimize or transfer some processes, such as video encoding/decoding, games, playback from the CPU to a relatively power-efficient and dedicated graphics processor.

[UPDATES] Microsoft feels jittery, to buy Nokia’s Devices & Services division, license patents and mapping for $7.2b

Looks like Microsoft unable to handle all the heat from the smartphone and tablet market and with it's ever failing Windows 8 Surface RT & Surface Pro tablets went into labor over the Labor Weekend and decided the best way to take hold of the situation was to buy  Nokia’s Devices & Services division, license patents and mapping for $7.2b.

This was bound to happen as both Microsoft and Nokia were on the verge of having drop-offs on their respective products and with Steve Ballmer stepping down in a year or so.

Things are looking up for Elop who would again join Microsoft, after having some meager amount of success at Nokia with a few products. Both companies (not including BlackBerry) have seen their market share eroded with Android and iOS 6 & 7 taking the market by storm.

In an inept method at gaining market share and with all the hoopla going on around it's own software's shortcomings, Microsoft made the decision to buy out Nokia's Devices & Services division just o boost it's own market share and to try and topple two Goliaths' with but a single stone.

Things are bleak and murky now and it will undoubtedly have an effect on the market for the coming years, but I'll reserve judgement for the outcome of this merger for some time now and let the sand settle to the ground. We all are awaiting more news on this.

This may turn out for the good if Microsoft is able to make good on this acquisition and develop a new phone with android and give a run to the other competitors on their home turn.

I'll just play the waiting game right now and see what this whole mess becomes...
